KATHMANDU, Nepal - On Thursday, top leaders from the five ruling coalition partners decided that Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana be deputized as the Supreme Court's acting chief justice.
Since Monday, Rana has been receiving treatment for Covid-19 at a Kathmandu hospital. The controversial chief justice, who has been under pressure to quit, has not yet turned over command to the Supreme Court's senior-most justice.
"Today's meeting has decided that we should advise the chief justice to go on leave and let the senior-most justice take charge of the Supreme Court." The spokesperson of the government, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, said after the meeting.
Thursday's meeting was attended by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and the leaders of coalition parties.
As per the traditional practice, the senior-most justice assumes command of the Supreme Court in the absence of the chief justice.
Deepak Kumar Karki is the Supreme Court's most senior justice.
