Georgian leader for probing US role in 'rose revolution'

Tbilisi, Oct 14 (RIA Novosti) The head of Georgia's Labour party Tuesday urged Washington to investigate the involvement of some US officials in 'bankrolling' Georgia's 'rose revolution' in 2003.

Labour Party leader Shalva Natelashvili urged the US government to appoint a special prosecutor. He said that the prosecutor should look into the role of US 'officials and public figures who masterminded and financed the 'rose revolution'.'

He said he hoped 'the present US administration will punish those who have hurt Georgia by importing a coup.'

As a consequence of the 'rose revolution', Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze resigned Nov 23, 2003, and the so-called troika - President Mikheil Saakashvili, Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania and Parliament Speaker Nino Burdzhanadze - came to power.

Zhvania died Feb 3, 2005 under mysterious circumstances, while Burdzhanadze joined the opposition in the wake of Aug 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
