Nigerian rebels threaten pipeline construction

Pakistan News.Net

A threat has been made against a major natural gas structure which is to run between Nigeria and Europe.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, Nigeria’s best known rebel group, has warned that matters in the Niger Delta need to be resolved before the pipeline’s security can be assured.

It is feared by the Nigerian government that the threats could eventually lead to the planned multi-billion-dollar pipeline project being sabotaged.

Since late 2005, MEND has frequently stolen oil, sabotaged oil installations and kidnapped oil workers for ransom.

The group and other militants have been fighting for greater control of natural resources in the region.

The pipeline will run from Nigeria, across Niger and Algeria to Europe.

Some countries have already expressed interest in investing billions of dollars in the Trans-Sahara pipeline.
