Mugabe makes conditions for talks

An angry Robert Mugabe, after flying home from an African Union summit, has told thousands of his supporters that opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai should not think he will renounce the presidency.

The defiant Mugabe said: 'I am the president of the republic of Zimbabwe and that is the reality.'

He ruled out the prospect of talks with his opponents on ending Zimbabwe's political crisis unless they acknowledged his victory in a one-man presidential election.

Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change party has denounced the pre-condition for further talks as a joke.

4,000 supporters had gathered at Harare to welcome Mugabe back home, after his attendance at the AU summit in Egypt.

84-year-old Mugabe, the oldest leader in Africa, escaped serious censure from his peers at the Egypt summit which instead ended with muted calls for the formation of a national unity government.
