Firefighters prepare for busy weekend
Pakistan News.Net Friday 4th July, 2008
California firefighters appear to be holding two bushfires burning along the California coast.
The Basin Complex and Gap fires, which have threatened more than 4,000 homes, are burning about 273 kilometres apart.
The Gap fire, burning north of Goleta, is considered the top priority because it has reached the doorsteps of some homes.
Although the blaze more than doubled in size to 5,400 acres, firefighters turned it away from Goleta, about 160 kilometres north-west of Los Angeles.
Forced evacuations and evacuation warnings are still in effect for some of the threatened homes.
Farther up the coast, firefighters turned the Basin Complex fire away from homes.
The fire is burning in the foothills above the scenic coastal community of Big Sur, about 225 kilometres south of San Francisco.
Firefighters are worried about expected windy and dry conditions over the weekend.
