Obama authorises arms exports to South Sudan

Pakistan News.Net Friday 6th January, 2012

President Barack Obama has officially lifted US restrictions on the sale of weapons to South Sudan.

On Friday he said the US would send defence equipment to South Sudan, Africa's newest nation, in order to "strengthen the security of the United States and promote world peace."

The US State Department said it would continue to discuss the military needs of South Sudan in an effort to solidify future defence relations and ensure local borders are secure.

South Sudan formally declared its independence from Sudan in July after a long civil war that raged for much of the period between 1955 and 2005.

The United States had helped bring about the agreement and has assisted in releasing the new country from economic sanctions imposed by Sudan, which it broke away from.

South Sudan and Sudan are still arguing over oil revenues and disputed regions.
